Respawn developer explains why Watson's awkward animation

Respawn principal animator Moy Parra recently explained on Twitter in a fun behind-the-scenes video why Apex Legends character Natalie 'Wattson' Paquette is holding her weapon "a little awkwardly"

Parraquette's character is holding her weapon "a little awkwardly.

Parra explained that Respawn wanted to convey in Wattson's animation that she was not used to handling weapons. Therefore, Wattson's motion capture was done by Parra's niece, who had never held a gun before, and "we wanted to capture this natural innocence in every movement of Wattson."

The video shows a side-by-side comparison of the original motion-capture performance and some of the animation used for Watson, including Watson running with a gun in his arms like an American football.

In his response to the video, Parra added, " A lot of our instructions were, don't try to play the character, just be yourself and find Wattson together!" This was the case.

The 22-year-old Watson character is one of the youngest of the Apex Legends, but her background and play style are decidedly non-combative. The daughter of an engineer, she has a special interest in engineering, and her toolkit is all about electric defensive play.

Watson also received a "big buff" in the recent Genesis Collection update. Watson can now place multiple Nessies on the map at once with an Epic Emote." In fact, up to 20 Nessie plushies can be placed on the map at a time.

For more information on how to best play Watson (and other Legends), see the Apex Legends character guide.
