Quake Champions Celebrates 25th Anniversary on One of Quake's Original Maps

Quake is celebrating its 25th anniversary, and Quake Champions will celebrate with a "rocket launch from the past" in the Summer 2021 update. In addition to numerous legacy weapon customizations, this update will add one of the first Quake multiplayer maps from 1996: Dark Zone

As someone who played the original Quake multiplayer as a kid, this is a standout. (Yes, it was age-inappropriate.) Some people get nostalgic over remastered JRPGs, others get nostalgic over sludgy brown bricks. This map is not as it is, it's the Quake Champions version, where the lighting is more fluid and the portals really shine. Most importantly, it still looks incredibly blocky.

Wes once reflected on why you should still play the original Quake, the "blueprint for 3D shooters" and the game that gave him so much wisdom: "It doesn't look so hot these days, and the fantasy setting is about as deep as a kid wearing a robe and a wizard hat. It's as deep as cosplay. That said, play a few levels and you'll understand why a throwback shooter like "Dusk" skipped 20 years of progress and went back to "Quake"-style level design. It's still the textbook that draws people in. It just has guns."

In addition to retro maps and legacy weapon skins (for the Tri-Bolt, Super Nailgun, and Railgun), this update also includes improved HUD and audio options, as well as improved anti-cheat protection For more information on the new elements of Quake Champions, Quake blog.
