Streamer's first experience with Final Fantasy 14 ruined by idiots

"Final Fantasy 14" got a bit of a boost this weekend. The game had the highest number of concurrent viewers ever on Steam, thanks in part to Asmongold, a regular streamer on World of Warcraft. For the most part, it was a nice little stream; over 200,000 viewers watched Asmongold descend on Eorzea for the first time, and he seemed to really enjoy it.

But all is well in life, and it didn't take long for a clown to appear to spoil the fun. As soon as Asmon Gold landed in his first public area, he was greeted by a mountain of other players. If you've never played Final Fantasy 14, some of the classes have rather obnoxious animations (Dark Knight) and the unlockable mounts are huge. That alone is an eyesore, but trying to get through a group of them is a nightmare. The crowding makes it difficult to select certain NPCs and objectives, and the large mounts and animations can easily obstruct your view.

Asmon Gold seemed to be a fan of the initial crowd, although he was a bit overwhelmed by the sheer chaos and laughed off the mess. As time went on, however, it was clearly getting harder and harder for him to play the game and enjoy it. 'Listen, guys. Chill out," he told the fans as he organized his class's quest. 'Chill out, chill out.'

Mount and the crowd were relentless throughout Asmon Gold's 10-hour stream, surrendering only for the brief time his character jumped into an instance quest or dungeon. This chaos continued throughout yesterday's 8-hour stream, with a character on a giant whale mount being particularly frustrating. It was clearly unnecessary for Asmon Gold, and one could feel his irritation growing throughout his second stream.

Thankfully, the game's GM seemed to step in to resolve the situation. A player claiming to be a whale mounter shared a screenshot on 4chan, and Square Enix sent an email banning the user for harassment and sabotage. The ban was later shared on reddit, where most commentators agreed that the ban was deserved.

I have to admit that it is a little frustrating to see Asmon Gold trying out Final Fantasy 14 for the first time. I can't help but feel that if you're being stalked by hundreds of people, killing mobs, and having huge mounts hovering over NPCs and quests on purpose, you're going to get tired very quickly. Asmon Gold says he is enjoying the game so far and hopes that over time there will be no more stream snipers.
