Fallout 76: Steel Reign Launches Today with Legendary Craft and "Steel Reign" Storyline for Finale

Bethesda today released Steel Reign, the 28th update for Fallout 76, bringing an end to the story of Brotherhood of Steel and introducing legendary crafting.

It's an update of a decent size, and there's a lot to unpack here; the Steel Reign quest line concludes the Brotherhood of Steel arc, and the story continues based on the choices made in Steel Dawn. If you are at least level 20 and have completed "The Best Defence" quest, you can take on a new quest.

The game also introduces a legendary crafting system, allowing players to upgrade regular items to legendary ones or to re-roll the status of existing legendary items. The stars of legendary items can also be upgraded or downgraded. Using a higher star legendary upgrade will upgrade the item and reroll its attributes, while using a lower star upgrade will downgrade the item and reroll its attributes. Bethesda also buffed or nerfed several existing attributes and added several new ones.

K.D. Inkwell also returned following the Steel Dawn update. This time, apparently, she's tasked with escaping from a strange and messed-up future where dolphin-human hybrids turn the few remaining humans into brainless goons, with 100 ranks and rewards to be had along the way.

A new vendor, Minerva, will appear at the "Minerva's Emporium" and "Minerva's Big Sale" events. The former runs from Monday through Wednesday, while the Big Sale runs from Thursday through Monday. Minerva regularly sells items, which can be exchanged for gold nuggets.

Bethesda also raised the wallet currency limit, increasing the maximum limit from 30,000 to 40,000. The daily vendor limit for gold bullion has doubled to 400 and the player limit has doubled to 10,000; the daily vendor limit for Scrip has doubled to 300 and players can now hold up to 5,000; new rewards were introduced during August Meet Week, with C.A.M.P slots and S.P.E.C.I.A.L loadouts were increased. As usual, a large number of bugs were also resolved.

The size of the update varies slightly depending on where you downloaded the game: 8.7 GB on Bethesda.net, 15.9 GB on Microsoft Store, and 7.1 GB on Steam. The full patch notes can be found on the Fallout website. This is not the end of the content for 2021, however, as Bethesda's roadmap indicates that there will be more to come later this year.
