Google Maps delivers shockingly fast runs

"Geoguessr" would not rank very high on the "Summer Games Done Quick" list of games. But as runner Havrd proved this week, this game of finding yourself on Google Maps can apparently be a nail-biting speed run.

Geoguessr, for those who don't know, is a browser-based game where you are thrown out to a random spot on the planet and guess where you are; if you get within 185 meters, you score a perfect 5,000 points.

As Kotaku discovered, this year's SGDQ included Geoguessr speedrunners, with Havrd achieving a perfect run, identifying five locations in 35 minutes for a total of 25,000 points. Usually it takes that long to guess one location (and you're probably off the mark), but Havrd's speed in identifying locations is absolutely astounding.

Havrd determined that he was in Turkey within one second of starting and hit the exact location just two minutes later. Italy did the same, but stumbled for a while in the vast desert of Nevada.

Nigeria proved to be Havrd's biggest problem, but he still quickly found himself in the capital Abuja. Havurd's total was 31:31, just short of his target time.

It turns out that any game can speedrun, and events like Summer Games Done Quick not only shine the spotlight on obscure runs like Geoguessr's, but also on the bizarre flowcharts of game logic that Styx literally It's also a great way to spotlight a secret: SGDQ is live on Twitch through Sunday, July 11.
