Surge of "Final Fantasy 14" Players Causes Square Enix Digital Editions to Temporarily Run Out of Stock

Aside from the old masters, "Final Fantasy 14" is probably the great success story in modern MMOs. It is constantly being updated with expansions that delight the player base and revitalize the world, telling meaningful shared stories that are rarely realized in MMOs, and attracting more players by word of mouth. And this weekend, the game became so popular that Square Enix somehow ran out of digital versions.

As discovered by u/Polydopamine over the weekend, Square Enix's online store had zero Final Fantasy 14 in stock (although you could join the waiting list), and players could not create new characters on any server without They could not even create them.

This was temporary, and I have confirmed that the game is now available again as a digital version.

The connection between the two games was not cut out of thin air: Final Fantasy 14 got a bit of a boost last weekend with a record number of simultaneous players on Steam. This was largely due to World of Warcraft's hugely popular streamer Asmongold getting to play a rival MMO for the first time, watched by over 200,000 viewers (some idiots tried to ruin the fun, but were largely unsuccessful).

This is not the first time Final Fantasy 14 has temporarily stopped accepting new players. But those were the first days of major expansions; Endwalker launches on November 23.

When we asked Square Enix for comment on the matter, we were told they could not comment at this time. A spokesperson added that the code "should not be used up" and is still under investigation.

Aside from the surge in player numbers, it's great that Square Enix has released a trailer for their benchmarking tool. It's a pretty good benchmarking tool for this kind of thing, but give me a break.

Last but not least: if "Final Fantasy 14" isn't enough for you, a cookbook is on the way. No kidding. A foreword by the game's director and producer Naoki Yoshida and "gorgeous photos of the finished recipes will ensure success!"

"The book contains numerous tips for getting the most out of your ingredients." Start your day with the "Farmer's Breakfast," a very famous, simple, yet delicious dish, taste the Knight's Bread from Coelzas, dive into the Laurent Berry Cheesecake from La Nocia, and much more."

"The book is a great way to start your day.

Now, PC Gamer knows one person who puts in a pre-order.
