Yes, it's "Nia": the official Steam fix for Automata is finally here!

It's been a long four years, but Nier: Square Enix will be sending out an update this weekend.

The upgrade patch was announced on Nier's official Twitter account in April. Square Enix has noticed that Nier: Square Enix has been review bombarded with Nier: Automata on Steam over the past few weeks, thanks to a much more stable Xbox Game Pass for PC release. While the Game Pass version was not perfect, many felt it was superior to the Steam version.

Mods to fix most of the problems with the Steam version of Automata have existed for several years, but Square Enix never fixed the issues themselves. Until now, this is the first major fix done to the Steam port since the game was released in 2017.

Most of the major issues with Automata seem to be getting fixed. That pesky mouse recurrence issue has been addressed, and the cursor should no longer pop up in the middle of the screen every 10 minutes while using the controller. Cutscenes have fortunately been bumped up to 60 fps and are no longer awkwardly stretched to different aspect ratios. Borderless window support was also finally added, a simple option that was oddly absent at the time of release. [UI textures have been upgraded to 4K, as well as the ability to toggle global illumination levels. The game now detects HDR, and if HDR mode is enabled, the game launches in HDR mode, along with a small adjustment to anti-aliasing.

The fix basically seems to do what the popular FAR mod has been doing for years, but it's nice to see Square Enix finally lift a finger for an official fix. The update will take place on July 15 at 9am PT/12pm ET/5pm BST. Can't be too late, right?
