French Game Trade Union Sues Ubisoft for "Organized Sexual Harassment"

The Solidaires Informatique trade union filed a new complaint against Ubisoft in the French court of Bobigny, alleging that executives, including CEO Yves Guillemot, were promoting a culture of "systematic sexual harassment" at Ubisoft.

"In June 2020, dozens of testimonies appeared on social media reporting instances of sexual harassment within Ubisoft, which were quickly corroborated by various press outlets (notably Libération and Numérama).

"On July 15, 2021, a complaint was filed in the Bobigny Criminal Court by Maud Beckers, representing the Solidaires Informatique union and several victims of the company.

Specifically named in the complaint are:

"More importantly, the complaint targets the company Ubisoft for systematic sexual harassment. . because it was determined that it was in the company's best interest to leave the harassers in place rather than to protect its employees, and because it established, maintained, and reinforced a system in which sexual harassment was tolerated." This harassment has been tolerated and practiced by the company's upper management, protected by the human resources department, and has created a company-wide system. With this action, we are attempting to dismantle the dynamics of this system beyond the list of persons mentioned above."

François, Hascoe, and Cornet are no longer with Ubisoft: all three left the company last year amid allegations of workplace misconduct and abuse. Yannis Marat, managing director of Ubisoft's Canadian studio, and Maxime Belin, vice president of Ubisoft, also resigned from the company amid similar complaints. Guillemot apologized for the abuse in September 2020, but took no responsibility.

In recent months, Gilmo has touted the company's leadership reforms aimed at making Ubisoft "an exemplary workplace in the tech industry." But not everyone is convinced that things are actually changing or that Guillemot has the ability to make it happen; Le Télégramme reported in May that some employees do not believe meaningful change is being brought about, and on Twitter, #. dubisoftaccountable hashtag trended on Twitter. The report also said that unions are planning collective legal action against Ubisoft, presumably referring to this complaint.

A representative of Solidaires Informatique said that the union is now filing suit because it took almost a year to gather evidence and testimony and put the case together.

"Systematic sexual harassment is a charge that is rarely seen in court in France, and our lawyer, Maud Beckers, wanted to make the case as strong as possible. But we believe the changes Ubisoft has made are superficial. The internal situation has not changed much and we hope that the developments in this case will attract attention and continue to put pressure on Ubisoft to keep its word."

Solidaires Informatique invited other potential complainants to join the case "to testify or file a complaint." In response to an inquiry about the new allegations, a Ubisoft representative provided a link to a May 2021 update detailing the company's changes in response to the allegations of misconduct, but beyond that, "further details about the allegations filed against Ubisoft He stated only that he was "not aware of any.
