Flipping through a fake future Wikipedia to solve a murder.

On October 1, 2049, two tycoons are assassinated in a helicopter crash, and all the clues to solving the mystery are scattered throughout the future fake successor to Wikipedia. [Neurocracy, released last week, is a narrative murder mystery set entirely within the entries of the future version of Omnipedia, the free online encyclopedia. Hidden between entries on reality TV shows, neural implants, and fatal diseases are clues that hint at the foul play behind the deaths of two executives.

You can solve the mystery yourself, but the developers have set up an official discord server so that aspiring detectives can brainstorm together. Still, there is the same voyeuristic pleasure in looking into this false future as there was when I picked up the Skyrim book or the BioShock audio log.

It is no accidental comparison either. In a blog post, writer Joannes Truyens explains that the idea for Neurocracy came from the kind of background stories you get in games like "Deus Ex" through emails and fictional newspapers.

The Neurocracy story will unfold in 10 episodes each week, with new pages being added and existing pages edited as the mystery unfolds. All 10 episodes are available for £15, and episode 1 is free to everyone now on Omnipedia.
