Fortnite Appoints Ferrari as First Licensed Car

Ferrari, the 80-something-year-old company that makes luxury cars that probably cost more than your entire house, is joining Fortnite for the first crossover of its kind, according to an official teaser from Fortnite and Ferrari's Twitter account. , players will be able to drive Ferrari's 296 GTB model in the game starting tomorrow.

If you want to see the car you'll be driving, this is the real Ferrari 296 GTB. The real car boasts a number of stats that are hard for me to comprehend, including a turbocharged V6 engine and an 818 hp electric motor. What I do know is that the 296 GTB was announced earlier this year and starts at about $330,000. If you can only afford home wifi, check out Ferrari's car configurator for all the bells and whistles you can fit; the 296 GTB will be available in 2022.

What makes this a little more interesting than the latest Fortnite skin is that this is the first time Fortnite has crossed over with a movie, comic book, another video game brand, or a non-celebrity brand like Buga, Neymar Jr. or LeBron James.

Ferrari actually has an esports division that kicked off in 2019, with digital racing competitions in sim driving games like Asseto Corsa. There are tournaments, large prize pools, and even an official Ferrari team lineup. Not a bad match for Fortnite, which is doing something similar with its own esports division.

"Fortnite" introduced drivable cars to battle royale as far back as season 3 of Chapter 2. Yet none of its vehicles (powered-up sports cars, semi-trucks, sedans, pickup trucks, etc.) are based on real-world models.

It's easy to picture Ferrari executives somewhere holding hands and gloating about how quickly the company has been able to build brand loyalty. Luxury brands getting into video games is not an entirely new concept, as evidenced by Louis Vuitton's creation of a carrying case for the "Summoner's Cup" of League of Legends, along with its clothing line. Rather than waiting for big-money adults to buy huge PC racing rigs, Ferrari can make their lineup more accessible to the kids (and many adults) who play "Fortnite". At least the kids will be able to save up for a Ferrari by the time they turn 60.

My guess is that the Ferrari will be treated similarly to Fortnite's current sports cars: lightning fast on paved roads, but sketchy on grass and dirt. Thankfully, the Ferrari in "Fortnite" breathes fire because someone is shooting at you.
