Seven Top "Borderlands 3" Developers Reportedly Leave Gearbox

Gearbox has confirmed a report from Axios that seven of the top developers of Borderlands 3 have left the company to form a new studio. Details of the new studio were not disclosed, but Gearbox Entertainment founder Randy Pitchford said their departure will not affect the development of the studio's current project, Tiny Tina's Wonderlands

"This is a very important project for the studio.

"This small group is great and talented, and we are very grateful for their contributions, creativity, and leadership. They leave Gearbox on the best of terms and we wish them well in their new venture. I am excited about their potential and look forward to watching their endeavors unfold. I also hope that our strong, mutually respectful relationship will lead to a new form of lasting partnership."

Gearbox's statement did not name the developers who have moved on, but according to Axios, the list includes Borderlands 3 creative director Paul Sage, senior producer Christopher Brock, lead mission Designer Keith Schuler, Art Director Scott Kester, UX Director Chris Strasz, and Lead Character Artist Kevin Penrod. While there is a lot of talent and experience to lose, especially all at once, Pitchford downplays the actual impact of their departure.

"Prior to their move, they were part of a pre-production team that has yet to be announced, and their departure would cause minimal disruption to current plans." If there is to be a move, now is the best time for it."

Pitchford described its new project as "only a small part of the transformation currently underway at Gearbox," and said it will include projects built on both existing and new properties. However, he emphasized that "the bulk of our attention right now is focused on completing Wonderlands," which he said is on track to meet its release target of early 2022.
