World of Warcraft" Player Seeks Removal of Reference to Former Blizzard Employee Accused in Harassment Lawsuit

After a two-year investigation, the State of California filed a lawsuit against Activision Blizzard, alleging discrimination, harassment, and a "frat boy" culture that affected women working for the company (a Blizzard spokesperson denied the allegations). The application names Alex Afrasiabi, former senior creative director of "World of Warcraft," and states that "Afrasiabi is known for his harassment of women, and his suite is named after alleged rapist Bill Crosby It was called the "Crosby Suite" after him.

Afrasiabi quietly left Blizzard in mid-2020, but his work remains in World of Warcraft, with multiple characters and items named after him. Most notably, a quest giver named Field Marshal Afras Siabi in Stormwind City and a quest called The Great Fras Siabi involving an NPC of the same name in Stratholme. References to his characters Kariel and Foror are also scattered throughout various items and lore items.

"I feel bad that there are so many NPCs and stories in this game with this man's name," one player wrote on Blizzard's forums." I love WoW, but I can't stand this one." WoW subreddits include a thread calling for the removal of the Afrasiabi Field Commander from Stormwind City and a thread in which a player uses the /spit emote on him.

WoW has a tradition of naming NPCs after prominent members of the community, such as a trainer named after streamer Byron 'Reckful' Bernstein in honor of him. They also remove those characters as needed, such as removing references to a YouTuber called Swifty after he was accused of harassment and abuse.

Some players have responded to the allegations by canceling their WoW subscriptions, spending their remaining game time in protest rallies of hundreds of people.
