Tokyo Olympics opened with video game software

The opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics took place today at the National Stadium. Greece was the first to appear as the birthplace of the Olympic Games, and the host country was the last. The music selected for this grand moment was a deep cut from Japan's incredibly rich history in the medium of video games.

Of course, the first song out of the gate was Dragon Quest, represented here by the epic "Introduction": the Theme of Lot.

Then we go straight into Final Fantasy's "Fanfare of Victory."

As Nikkan Sports reports, the full order of the songs played is as follows:

The most notable thing about this is that it is something of an eclectic selection: aside from NieR, it is surprising that Gradius is included, and there is clearly a lot of JRPG love ( Chrono Trigger's "Frog's theme", those maniacs). I'm a little shocked that Sonic is there and Mario isn't. Throw in a little Gusty Garden Galaxy. In fact, it seems odd that there are no Nintendo masterpieces at all, especially since the only other Nintendo game on the list is "The Frog's theme.
