Cyberpunk 2077 has already sold more than 13 million copies.

Despite a number of major technical problems (recently discovered that save files exceeding 8 MB in size can lead to irreparable damage) and the complete removal of the game from the PlayStation Store, "Cyberpunk 2077" has been a huge hit: CD Projekt announced today that the game has sold more than 13 million copies across all platforms as of December 20.

It is worth noting that this 13 million figure takes into account the refund claims that CD Projekt, Sony, and Microsoft began offering shortly after the game's launch.

"This figure is derived from the estimated retail sales volume across all hardware platforms (taking into account returns submitted by retail customers in physical and digital storefronts), or 'sell-through' figures, to the date of publication of this report, in the framework of the 'Help Me Refund' campaign, where the Company minus all refund requests received by e-mail directly to the Company in the framework of the 'Help Me Refund' campaign up to the date of publication of this report," CD Projekt said in a regulatory release.

Cyberpunk 2077 was a huge success, with a lucrative pre-release campaign resulting in nearly 8 million pre-orders, making it the largest PC launch in history and enough to recoup all development and marketing costs on launch day. This means that roughly 5 million more units were sold after launch.

Unfortunately, despite multiple delays and a prolonged period of tightness that left many employees frustrated with the studio's management, the game was plagued by serious technical problems at launch, indefinite refund offers, and eventually the PlayStation Store's listing which even led to its delisting. It was a bad week for CD Projekt, to say the least.

In light of this, it may not seem appropriate to declare victory at this time, but as industry analyst Daniel Ahmad noted on Twitter, this statement is not for gamers, but for upset investors.

Since CD Projekt refuses to share detailed data on the number of sell-throughs and refund requests, it is possible that "Cyberpunk 2077" had even bigger sales at launch, but the numbers were lowered due to the post-launch debacle, or that the 13 million units figure was close to total sales, and most owners may have decided to ride it out as best they could. Either way, the larger impact will be felt in the coming months: as Ahmad pointed out, the launch week was huge, but a very high-profile rebound could have a powerful negative impact on long-term sales.
