The basic specs of the Nvidia RTX 3080 mobile GPU seem to have been confirmed by solid leaked information: the GA104 silicon with 48 SM, or 6,144 CUDA cores, is likely to be included in new gaming laptops as the RTX 3080.

Some of the most exciting new PC gaming-related products coming early this year are the new Nvidia RTX 30 series gaming laptops. With the power the Green Team has put into their desktop cards, it's no wonder they can't wait to see what happens in ampere mobile trim. It looks like we won't have to wait long either, as leak after leak has revealed more details about the new GPU.

This latest leak comes directly from the Geekbench database and was dug up by prominent Twitter leaker (tweaker?) TUM_APISAK. While I don't think it is entirely reliable when it comes to analyzing the potential gaming performance of a particular graphics card, it does give us a fairly reliable glimpse into the core specs of the GPU in question.

These results were obtained from tests on an Asus ROG Zephyrus GX551QS laptop. This machine is a beast with a yet-to-be-announced AMD Ryzen 9 5900H CPU and Nvidia RTX 3080, and promises to be one of the most powerful new gaming laptops to appear this year. With the virtual CES 2021 virtually opening next week and both AMD and Nvidia expected to unveil their respective mobile parts, this Asus machine is expected to be one of the new gaming laptops that will be pushed to the forefront next week everywhere. [The Ryzen 9 5900H is an 8-core, 16-thread CPU clocked up to 4.54 GHz. The mobile version of the RTX 3080 has 48 SM, 6,144 CUDA cores, and 16 GB of (presumably) GDDR6 instead of GDDR6X.

It is unlikely that Nvidia would reduce the GA102 GPU from 84 SMs to 48 SMs for a mobile SKU, so as Videocardz suggested, this is the GA104 GPU Nvidia is already using for the desktop Nvidia RTX 3070 card. It is most likely a full version.

In other words, one could argue that the RTX 3080 in the upcoming gaming laptops is not the real RTX 3080, as it uses a completely different Ampere silicon, but the "what's in a name" desktop mobile GPU with the same performance as the RTX 2080 Ti still smells sweet, doesn't it?
