Valve Permanently Bans Matchfix esports club and five Dota 2 pros, including former winner of The International

In May 2020, Newbee, a Chinese esports organization that won the 2014 Dota 2 International, was involved in an alleged Dota 2 match fixing. The incident occurred in February 2020 in a match between Newbee and Avengerls at the Dota 2 Starladder ImbaTV League, a minor event in Valve's Dota Pro Circuit.

A video of one of the matches in question can be seen below. At the time, clips of the match were widely recognized as having been spread and thrown, and retired Newbee player and international tournament winner Zhang 'Xiao8' Ning left a comment to the effect of "If Avengerls didn't fix this match, I would eat shit."

When the allegations first surfaced, Newbee was banned from participating in various Dota 2 events, including the CDA-DPL Pro League, IMBA TV, and MarsTV schedules. At the time, Newbee denied any wrongdoing and said he would appeal. Now, Newbee and the five players involved have been permanently banned from competing in Valve and Perfect World events.

The announcement was made on Dota 2's Weibo account and translates to this: "Perfect World and Valve have decided to permanently ban the Newbee Club and the five players. The suspended club and players will not be allowed to participate in any official DOTA2 events organized by Valve and Perfect World E-sports."

The players involved are Lipeng 'Wizard' Wen, Han 'Moogy' Xu, Rui 'Aq' Yin, Chao 'Waixi' Yan and Hongda 'Faith' Zeng. Hongda Zeng was a member of the Invictus Gaming team that won the International in 2012, while Newbee as a club won the International in 2014 and was runner-up in 2017. For all of them, it's game over for good.
