General
Bloks is a cute little Tetris-esque deity.

I shaped my landscape. I pioneered the sea. It took so long to get here, but finally two puny humans, Adam and Eve, set up industrial dwellings on a muddy mountain, and life was born.

I slipped my fingers and they were immediately crushed by an L-shaped block of lava. Oops.

Released early in the new year, "Bloks" is an attempt by Dutch indie rascal Sokpop to create a little god game out of bones that break the shape of Tetris. Each tetronimo creates a whole new world, from the sizzling molten core to the oxygen that fills the lungs of a new civilization.

Every form is formed of its own elements and behaves uniquely. Sometimes, when you put them together, they fold over and become something new. If sand falls next to water, it becomes mud; if you drop it next to molten rock, it becomes glass. Put them together in a full line and they pop and you get the most valuable element: DNA.

With DNA, you can grow birds, fish, and humans. If they keep supplying humans with oxygen, they will start building houses and factories. According to the game's store page, they could eventually escape, but I could not keep them alive for long.

Even though playing God was a bit of a pain, I enjoyed the primitive elements of the game to a point. There was an almost Minecraft-like sense of discovery in the new block types, reminding me of the time I spilled a bucket of water on a lava spill and found obsidian at the bottom of a cave.

Bloks is short. But like the best socpop games, it heralds an idea that I can easily imagine being extended in a thousand directions, and since it's $3/€3 at Itch, it's worth a look.
