Twitch Bans Trump

The President's official Twitch channel has been suspended following yesterday's attack on the U.S. Capitol by far-right supporters of President Trump.

"Following yesterday's shocking attack on Capitol Hill, we have suspended President Trump's Twitch channel," said a Twitch spokesperson." Given the current extraordinary circumstances and the incendiary rhetoric of the President, we believe this is a necessary step to protect our community and prevent Twitch from being used to incite further violence."

The representative clarified that Twitch is trying to minimize the damage in preparation for the transition to the new administration on January 20 and will "re-evaluate accounts after the president leaves office."

(Twitch also removed the PogChamp emote from its platform due to related comments by the face of the emote.) [This is not the first time Trump's Twitch account has been stripped: in 2020, his account was suspended for two weeks for violating rules against hateful conduct and harassment. However, yesterday's events, in which a mob of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol building in response to the president's repeated and unsubstantiated claims that the election was stolen, resulting in four deaths and multiple injuries, caused a fairly widespread and visible backlash. President Trump's Facebook and Instagram accounts were also suspended today, and his Twitter account was temporarily locked.

The reaction to the U.S. president's social media actions occurred with only 13 days remaining in his four-year term.

Update: Trump's Twitter account was restored after the tweets in question were deleted, but his account was permanently suspended after a follow-up tweet posted on January 8 was deemed to violate Twitter's policy against glorifying violence.

Two tweets violated the rule:

"As tensions continue to rise in the United States and the global conversation about those who violently attacked the Capitol on January 6, 2021, these two tweets are not consistent with broader domestic events, inciting violence and other The ways in which the President's remarks may be mobilized by different audiences, and also need to be read in the context of the pattern of behavior of this account over the past few weeks," Twitch explained.

"After evaluating the wording of these tweets against our violence glorification policy, we have determined that these tweets violate our violence glorification policy and that user @realDonaldTrump should be permanently suspended from the service immediately."
