Gotham Knights heroes level up even when not in play.

In case you missed Gotham Knights, which was announced last year: no, it is not set in the same timeline as the Arkham games. Sure, the setting details are similar to the ending of Arkham Knight, but Gotham Knights unfolds in a different continuity than the previous Batman games: Kill the Justice League will continue the Arkham version of the DC Universe.

Now that that's out of the way, let's catch up on some new information from GamesRadar's interview with Gotham Knights executive producer Fleur Marty and creative director Patrick Redding. Gotham Knights features four playable characters (Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood, and Robin), and as you play, you will gain new gear, costumes, and unlock abilities. Marty explained that no hero will be left behind in the progression, no matter which hero you leave behind while you take on the Court of Owls or Mr. Freeze.

"The story progression is shared by all characters, so it makes sense not to have to level up from scratch every time you switch. It also maintains consistency in terms of storyline. The other members of the Batman family are always present in some form in the background while you're fighting crime or solving mysteries. So it makes sense that they are also progressing and getting stronger."

Each night, you set out to reclaim one of Gotham's five boroughs from the villains who have thrived in Batman's absence, then spend the day at your base, the Bell Tower, adjusting your builds and choosing which mission to take on next.

Solo play is available, but there is also a two-player drop-in/drop-out co-op experience, which Redding said was designed around. The "two-player dynamic fits the fantasy and Gotham City setting. The "duo" or "team-up" is such a central feature of the world that it has literal abbreviations in the comics, cartoons, movies, and TV versions," he said. Apparently, the city is designed to allow dynamic duos to thrive in small spaces. Gotham is a city of alleys and roofs," Redding explained, "so the footprint for gameplay has to fit that."

Gotham Knights is slated for release in 2021; here's what we know so far about Gotham Knights.
