Brits Spent More on Gaming in 2020 Than on TV Shows and Movies Combined

To say that 2020 was a strange year would be an understatement. For many of us, most days are spent in the comfortably stroked boredom of our homes. Daily commutes have been replaced by Zoom calls in our pajamas, and trips to the cinema have been replaced by unlimited Netflix viewing.

All of this may contribute to the fact that in 2020, Britons will spend more on video games than on TV shows and movies combined. Video games accounted for 4.2 billion pounds ($5.6 billion) of home entertainment sales. This is the first time the UK gaming industry has exceeded £4 billion, up 14.5% from 2019. TV shows and movies together brought in 3.2 billion pounds ($4.3 billion), while music brought in 1.5 billion pounds ($2 billion). Thanks to the Entertainment Retailers Association for the numbers.

FIFA 21 was crowned last year's best-selling game, selling more than 2 million copies of the digital and disc versions combined; Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War came in second with more than 1.4 million copies sold. Grand Theft Auto 5 continues to be Rockstar's breadwinner despite being on sale for more than seven years; it sold an astounding 1 million copies in 2020 alone, making it the third best-selling game in the UK.
