Nvidia's $999 RTX 3060 Gaming Laptop Delivers 30% More Performance than PS5

Nvidia just announced a new generation of Ampere gaming laptops that offer twice the power efficiency of previous architectures, but the biggest news is that the Nvidia RTX 3060 laptop is faster than anything on the market today, including the RTX 2080 Super The biggest news is that the Nvidia RTX 3060 laptop is faster than anything on the market today, including the RTX 2080 Super. These are said to be capable of delivering a $999 gaming laptop with 30% more performance than Sony's PlayStation 5.

Nvidia is calling this the largest gaming laptop launch ever, with over 70 new gaming laptops from various OEMs, and the laptops are expected to be available starting January 26 this year.

Three new notebook GPUs are candidates: the RTX 3060, RTX 3070, and RTX 3080 with up to 16GB GDDR6. Nvidia appears to be starting to pay attention to the demand for larger amounts of video memory, especially with the new Nvidia RTX 3060 with 12GB of GDDR6 being announced at CES.

This is more memory capacity than any of the RTX 30 series GPUs released to date, with the exception of the RTX 3090's ridiculously large 24GB.

As mentioned, the RTX 3060 notebook will completely replace the RTX 2060 series machines, starting at $999 for a notebook capable of 90 fps game shifts at 1080p ultra settings.

The RTX 3070 is labeled "1440p Gaming Beast" in reference to the fact that this next-generation gaming notebook will feature a high-end, high-refresh rate QHD panel, promising 50% higher frame rates than the RTX 2070 and 1440p Ultra setting to achieve 90 fps.

These machines are expected to start at $1,299.

Then there is Nvidia's flagship mobile graphics card, the RTX 3080 with a massive 16GB of GDDR6 memory. This is the GPU that powers the world's fastest laptops, the "new flagships."

This GPU promises to deliver over 100 fps at 1440p ultra settings, with prices starting at $1,999. However, you would be hard-pressed to find a laptop manufacturer willing to put the RTX 3080 in a laptop under $2,000. [The memory side of things is interesting, however, as the specs state that the RTX 3080 can be equipped with up to 16GB of GDDR6. Whether that will be 10GB, the same as the desktop Nvidia RTX 3080, or down to 8GB remains to be seen.

However, it is speculated that the $1,999 notebook will not have a 16GB card.

There are a few other updates Nvidia is rolling out with its new laptop GPUs, including a new spin on Dynamic Boost, version 2.0, which promises to use Ampere's AI abilities to manage power between the GPU, CPU, and VRAM, and a laptop improve the balance of power and performance between all the thirstiest parts of the laptop.

Resizable BAR was also finally announced, giving the CPU full access to the graphics card's video memory. This will slightly improve performance on some Intel 10th generation processors.

The next generation gaming laptops will be available on January 26 and are now open for pre-order. And if all the technology announced in the last six months is anything to go by, they will sell out quickly...
