More than 2 billion tweets about games posted in 2020

2020 was a shitty year by any measure. But when it came to tweets about video games, it clearly scored high: according to Twitter's metrics, over 2 billion tweets about games were shared in 2020, a whopping 75% increase over 2019.

One reason for this huge jump, as you may recall, is that 2020 was the year of the global pandemic, and people were indoors in front of their PCs more than usual. major industry events like E3, Gamescom, and GDC went digital, and publishers took the opportunity to held their own online events.

This must have contributed to the 49% year-over-year spike in unique game tweeters. Gaming was the sixth most followed topic on Twitter throughout the year, with categories that include:

Surprise! The top country tweeting about games was not the U.S., but Japan.

Also interesting is the list of the most tweeted about games in 2020. Cyberpunk 2077, one of the biggest and most anticipated core game releases in years, is nowhere to be found. Fortnite" is ranked in the middle of the pack, which is not surprising, and "Apex Legends" is also in the top 10, indicating that interest in this game is hanging strong.

Most notable, however, are the mobile games: Fate/Grand Order, Disney: Fate/Grand Order, Disney: Twisted Wonderland, Ensemble Stars! , "Knives Out" (unrelated to the movie), and "Identity V" have all been released on mobile. According to market analysis firm Sensor Tower, it was the second highest-grossing mobile game in the first two months after launch.

It will be interesting to see how much of the entertainment and hobby pie games will make up in 2021, through Twitter's metrics or otherwise. The pandemic is still raging, especially in the U.S., but the development of a vaccine promises to eventually slow and halt its progress. In the meantime, we are stuck in our homes for a long time (forever). I intend to.

Somehow, the list of most tweeted gaming events does not include our PC Gaming Show. Perhaps just an oversight, but here are the top five at the moment:

Next year.
