LG's "Smart Bed" with 55-inch translucent TV is the peak of CES, but we're all about it.

LG's latest CES innovation brings us one step closer to the ideal gaming experience. Lie back, bend your neck to the headboard, and try not to spill instant noodles on the bed sheets; LG's concept offers a glimpse of the future of TV technology in one transparent, extendable 55-inch display.

The LG Transparent OLED Smart Bed (via Tom's Guide) is a concept product LG is showing off at CES 2021. Calling it a bed is a bit of an exaggeration; it's actually just a unit that sits at the end of a bed and houses an impressive translucent screen. But it remains a pretty smart space-saving idea, even if one can only imagine its use in a luxury hotel.

When you want to view the screen from under the covers, you press a button and the screen lifts up from the unit in about 25 seconds.

The screen on the prototype is 40% transparent and appears transparent during operation. This will no doubt have some impact on image quality, but the idea is probably to avoid creating a completely closed bedroom viewing experience. While perhaps not the best scenario for gaming, LG is touting further use of transparency technology in the real world.

There is no need to expand the entire screen. It can function as a hot bar that displays important information while fully retracted into the unit, or it can display only a portion of the screen.

LG is only bringing a transparent 55" bed as a concept to CES in 2021, not a fully realized product. It may be some time before we can actually hold one in our hands. Also, the price is yet to be determined, but we can assure you that a transparent, backlightless TV will not be cheap.

And what about fragility?
