Waiting Intel CEO Tells Employees They Should Make Better CPUs Than Apple

Intel's next CEO, Pat Gelsinger, will officially take over in February, but he has already attended a meeting with the entire Intel staff, reports The Oregonian (paid subscription). According to his remarks at the meeting, Gelsinger is looking to head "a lifestyle company in Cupertino."

"We have to provide the PC ecosystem with products that are better than anything a lifestyle company in Cupertino could possibly make," Gelsinger is said to have told Intel employees (via The Verge). We have to be that better company in the future."

Apple's headquarters are in Cupertino, California, where the Apple Park headquarters are located.

Intel is clearly focused on competing with fellow x86 company AMD for chip supremacy, but Apple's abandonment of Intel in favor of its own ARM chips seems to be a blow to a company once lauded for its perfect chip manufacturing record.

In Gelsinger's own words, it will be Gelsinger's job to ensure that Intel does not follow the path of the "lifestyle companies."

Gelsinger will succeed current Intel CEO Bob Swan on February 15, 2021.

And we think he may be the best person for the job. Gelsinger, an engineer who knows Intel inside and out, is seen by many as the right man for the CEO job. This is especially true on Wall Street. On the day Gelsinger's appointment was announced, Intel's stock rose more than 10%.

But turning this ship around is still a tough job and will take years. In the meantime, Intel may be considering outsourcing some of its chip production to TSMC, TrendForce said, which Intel may consider delaying because of Gelsinger's comments, The Oregonian noted.
