Activision to Bring Tony Hawk 1+2 Developers to Blizzard's Full-Time Support Studio

In a statement to GamesIndustry.biz on Friday, Activision moved its game studio Vicarious Visions under the Blizzard Entertainment umbrella and said that its development staff of about 200 "existing Blizzard games and initiatives to be fully dedicated to" Vicarious Visions' latest project is "Tony Hawk 1+2," which we called "everything you want in a remake of a 20 year old game."

Vicarious Visions has been an Activision studio since 2005, and its history with the Tony Hawk series goes back even further than that: it developed the Game Boy Advance version of "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater" (which did surprisingly well) starting in 2002 It was also Vicarious Visions. Over the past decade, Vicarious Visions has created dozens of games for the handheld platform, as well as successful remakes such as "Crash Bandicoot: The N. Sein Trilogy. The studio is also responsible for the excellent PC port of Destiny 2.

"Tony Hawk 1+2" was a breakout success for the studio and seemed like the ideal foundation for remaking the popular "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3" and "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4". However, it seems unlikely that Vicarious Visions will develop a remake of them.

"After working with Vicarious Visions for a while and building a great relationship, Blizzard realized that there was an opportunity for [Vicarious Visions] to provide long-term support," Activision told GamesIndustry.biz. said. The studio will now focus on contributing to Blizzard's existing and upcoming games, such as "Overwatch 2" and "Diablo 4."
