Rocket League's newest arena now has the option to turn off lighting effects.

Neon Fields, which appeared last month, is an aggressive cyberpunk map: an 80s text generator becomes a soccer pitch, a light bike arena lit by the neon lights of Tron is a car soccer arena lit by the evening sun of Vaporwave is being repurposed as a "car soccer arena" in the evening sun of Vaporwave. Unfortunately, The Loadout reports that the bright strobe lights are causing epileptic seizures in some players, and with no reliable way to avoid individual maps, the game is suddenly unplayable for these players.

Now developer Psyonix hopes to get these players back on the field with a new accessibility option: in a February 1 update, the developer will tone down Neon Fields' lighting shenanigans with a new visual effect toggles will be introduced.

"Based on recent player feedback, we recognized that Neon Fields' effects and lighting could negatively impact the gaming experience for some players. To ensure that it continues to be, we are adding a new setting option called "Effect Intensity" that adjusts the intensity and motion of the visuals in this arena."

The "Default" option keeps the map as is, while the "Low" setting makes the following changes to Neon Fields.

Neon Fields will not be the only cyberpunk-themed December release to cause unintentional seizures. Cyberpunk 2077's "brindance" sequence, which mimics the light patterns doctors use to intentionally induce seizures, was widely reported to cause epileptic episodes. Although it was later remedied in a hotfix, it was already damaging, as in "Rocket League," underscoring the importance of testing the triggering effect prior to launch.

Rocket League's February update will introduce these measures on February 1 at 11 p.m. Japan time / 4 p.m. Pacific Standard Time. It would be best not to pitch in until then.
