General
Nvidia RTX 3080s are selling on eBay for an average of $1,300, or 85% more than MSRP.

According to data engineer Michael Driscoll's latest analysis of the GPU market, eBay and StockX resellers may have sold over 50,000 RTX 30 series GPUs. That's $61.5 million in sales, or roughly $15.2 million in profit for those looking to make a quick buck on the less-than-desirable resale market.

The Chicago-based data engineer has been tracking GPU sales for some time using his own data-scraping code, initially plotting the selling price of GPUs on eBay against their suggested retail price. I think you're right, Alan.

Driscoll's latest detailed report is similarly bad news for prospective graphics card buyers. The report points to a significant price increase for RTX 30 series graphics cards, which currently shows no sign of abating.

The RTX 3060 Ti's median price is currently $667 on eBay, just shy of the RTX 3080's MSRP and well above the card's MSRP of $399. [The RTX 3070 has a median price of $809 and the RTX 3080 is $1,300; the RTX 3090 has not been affected as much by the price increase, perhaps because it already has an MSRP of $1,499. However, it now sells for over $2,000, a price increase of over 33%.

StockX prices are a bit lower on average, but still well above MSRP, high enough for the reseller market to make a decent profit.

The most popular cards are those included in the Founders Edition, with cards from EVGA, Asus, and MSI following close behind.

Even older generation GPUs such as the 16 and 20 series have reported price increases as a result. Under normal circumstances, one would expect prices for these cards to rise as inventory boils over and is gradually depleted to make room for new stock, but the significant price increase here may be dictated by an overall shortage of graphics silicon.

This is great data that tells an unfortunate tale, and hats off to Driscoll for gathering and collating the information.

Before considering a reseller, it is advisable to be patient and try the official channels; the RTX 30 series inventory is gradually being supplied to the market and it is not impossible to find a card from a reputable retailer.

It seems you need to be in the right place at the right time.

There is light at the end of the tunnel: while Nvidia aims to return to normalcy in May, AMD has estimated that it will not be able to meet demand until late 2021.
