Whatever your feelings about the Epic Games Store, it's safe to say that over the past 12 months, large numbers of people have been getting free items from the platform on a weekly basis. At least according to an infographic released by Epic looking back at the year 2020.

Epic's look back, posted earlier today, touts staggering numbers about the platform's past year. Topping the showcase is the news that more than 160 million people purchased something from the Epic Games Store last year (up from 108 million in 2019) and spent more than $700 million overall.

But the Epic Games Store is perhaps best known for its free distribution, and people took advantage of it. in 2020, more than 103 free games were distributed, an amount that would cost about $2,407 if purchased at full price. in one year, these free games were distributed 700 million In one year, these free games were claimed more than 70 million times, or 49 million times.

Epic also lists the most popular games in the store in 2020 (although it is clear that Fortnite remains a huge success for the studio), Satisfactory, Snowrunner, and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1& 2 are on the list, which is a pleasant surprise. Even more shocking is Godfall, a thoroughly serviceable slasher router that Dave Meikleham described in his review as "gorgeous, hollow, and rarely polished."

The blog post also highlights storefront enhancements over the past year: while still lacking compared to Steam and others, the past 12 months have seen the addition of wishlists, expanded mod support, enhanced currency support, self-service refunds and many other less flashy improvements.

So what's next, Epic says it wants to make it easier for developers to enter the store. There also appears to be some sort of "social overhaul" planned, including improvements to wishlists and achievements, and the addition of player profiles and more "community oriented" features.
