Destiny 2 eliminates weekly bounties, increases repercussions

Destiny 2 will do away with weekly bounties next season and introduce a new "weekly challenge" system.

Senior Community Manager Dylan Gafner announced plans to replace Destiny's boring weekly bounty system with a new weekly challenge in the studio's latest "This Week At Bungie" article. This will be immediately obvious to anyone who has seen Apex Legends' Battle Pass or similar, which will deliver "3-10" new challenges each week for the first 10 weeks of the season

. While the Daily Bounty will remain, Bungie believes that the challenges will allow for a freedom of activity that is not limited by the constraints of the Weekly Bounty. The challenge will also increase the amount of Bright Dust earned, which Destiny has been a bit stingy with lately.

"In moving away from weekly bounties, which were limited to broad goals tied to ritual activities, we now have more latitude in creating interesting or more challenging challenges. These may be things you are already doing, or they may be tests of your abilities.

Challenges are not the only thing that have been revamped. In preparation for eventual cross-play support, Bungie has enhanced the recoil effects of six weapons for players who play with a mouse and keyboard. Currently, the recoil punch of auto rifles, SMGs, and hand cannons is about 40% less than that of controllers. This figure will be reduced to about 20% later this year.

"Destiny" players have been concerned about the game's recoil disparity between platforms for years, but the community seems intent on reducing recoil on the gamepad, and Bungie's attempt to do the opposite by making guns harder to handle on the PC is likely to be controversial, to say the least.

As always, Destiny 2 is now in a sort of uncertain place. The Weekly Challenge might alleviate some of the hassle of bounties across three characters. Concerns about limited Bright Dust opportunities might also be turned around. Destiny players, however, are still reeling from Bungie's decision to sunset weapons and vaults over half of the game's planets, raids, and content.

Bungie has already announced plans to revamp rewards for next season, with more guns and the aforementioned cross-play coming later this year. Season 13 kicks off next Tuesday, February 2.
