Possible Oculus Quest 2 120Hz Update Makes Valve Index Sales Much Tougher

Oculus Quest 2 looks to be going head-to-head with Valve Index. The VR headset, which at first glance appears to be continuing to improve, has a 120Hz refresh rate update available. This is according to a recent Q&A with Andrew Bosworth, vice president of Facebook Reality Labs, who gave a thumbs up when asked if Quest 2 could receive a 120Hz update.

This brief response may suggest that he does not want the details to actually be drawn out, and may even cast doubt on the actual likelihood of such an update. However, the fact that this Q&A took place on Instagram, and that "Boz" Bosworth answered the question with a simple physical emote, might be taken a bit more literally.

Currently, Quest 2 runs at a default refresh rate of 90 Hz, thanks to a relatively recent November update. At launch, the refresh rate was 72 Hz, but there was an experimental option available to run at a higher rate. For a standalone headset, the 90 Hz figure gives a fairly decent experience.

However, a 120Hz refresh rate would be practically equivalent to the Valve Index and could provide a higher fidelity experience than Gabe's favorite at a panel resolution of 1832 x 1920 per eye. Indeed, the Index has improved optics, gorgeous small speakers, and a separate one-eye panel, as opposed to the Quest 2's single-screen option, but this is a headset at about a third of the price.

The Quest 2 display is said to be functionally capable of 120 Hz, but as with the first experimental 90 Hz mode, the question will be how this will affect battery life and the built-in mobile chipset. Indeed, effectively utilizing higher refresh rates with such low-power silicon will be a challenge in itself. [But if Quest 2 can reach that height while connected to a PC and playing Microsoft Flight Sim or Half-Life: Alyx on a PC, that's fine by me: but If Quest 2 can reach that height, I will be a very happy man. I've recently stepped back into VR, now that I have a small space around my PC, and the 90Hz operation of my current headset is already an amazing experience.

The Virtual Desktop wireless setup is still too laggy for my home setup as I am unable to connect my PC to my router, but this may be where the 120Hz update could really impact my PC VR experience. But how many people would still consider the Valve Index if they could combine wireless gaming, higher resolution, and the same refresh rate at a third of the price?
