Take a peek at the xCloud browser client before the public preview this spring.

Until now, Microsoft's xCloud streaming service has been exclusive to Android phones and tablets. However, a new report from The Verge suggests that a new web browser version of the service will soon be able to stream Xbox games.

Sources familiar with Microsoft's streaming plans told the outlet that the company is currently testing a web version of xCloud ahead of a planned public preview. Screenshots show that xCloud's browser client is very similar to Stadia's, with a similar storefront and full-screen functionality during playback. It also mentions the ability to resume recently played titles, but a gamepad must be connected in order to play games via the service.

Last December, Microsoft announced plans to offer an xCloud beta version of its browser and Windows 10 Xbox app as part of its Game Pass Ultimate subscription by spring 2021. One of the screenshots shows this relationship, showing not only the new games added to Game Pass, but also a list of games that are being withdrawn from Game Pass.

Of course, the browser version would also help xCloud bypass the App Store, which does not allow streaming services in its store. Apple has previously blocked streaming services like xCloud, Stadia, and Steam Link, claiming that its policy is to "protect customers and provide a fair and level playing field for developers."

Apple eventually countered by allowing these apps to exist as long as all games on its service also exist on the App Store. Calling the move a "bad experience for customers," Microsoft decided to bypass the storefront altogether by letting iOS users browse its website.

xCloud will be available through the Xbox App or Chromium browser once it launches in beta later this year.
