Blaseball Returns Next Month for a New Season of Absurd Internet Sports

It's been a while since we last heard from Blaseball, the popular Internet baseball simulation turned peanut religion, and after going inactive at the end of October, The Game Band is ready to open season 12 of the Internet League Blaseball on March 1.

At the very least, there is a "99.9%" chance that they will be back in March. Frankly, who knows what kind of Eldritch nightmare will cause the season to be postponed next month.

With their own description of this fantasy baseball league, titled "Beta, But Better," as "D&D in sports," developer That Game Band has saved us the trouble of explaining what exactly Blaseball is.

"DM is your older brother and you are the chaotic sibling with a thirst for power. The game follows the votes of you and the fans and may bend the rules so much that new rules are made on the fly; Blaseball simulates a season at an accelerated pace, one game per hour and one season per week. Players wager coins on every game, trying to earn enough wealth to sway votes in the post-season elections the following Sunday.

Voting is, of course, where things get very wild. Fans can vote on everything from randomly trading players and boosting their stats to eliminating teams altogether or opening "forbidden books." Players have been set on fire, brought back from the dead, and "bombarded" with malicious peanut nuts. Season 9 ended with a boss battle involving a Charleston shoe thief and the aforementioned nut god.

Season 12 adds several new elements. Soon snacks will be available for purchase, and a new feed will allow users to track events. The new configuration will add a two-week off-season to the three-week season. Finally, and most importantly, Baltimore crabs (get your claws in!) will get its own "crabitat". Whatever that is.

We'll also see how much frenzy Blaseball can generate. The game's first arc was created by the community as well as the developers, with fans coming together to bring character, drama, and story to the game's absurdly named players. Do people still care about Jessica Telephone and Jaylen Hotdog Fingers after all these years? We'll find out when Season 12 kicks off next month.
