Valheim developer details new roadmap, says mini-bosses may be added

When Valheim launched on February 2, developer Iron Gate posted an Early Access roadmap showing what is planned to be added to the Viking cooperative survival game in 2021.

The roadmap didn't contain much detail, just the names of some intriguing updates, including Hearth and Home, Cult of the Wolf, Ships and the Sea, and a new biome called Mistlands.

This week, however, we spoke with Henrik Törnqvist, co-founder of Iron Gate Studios, about the contents of these updates and were able to get some additional information. We also talked a bit about new features like mini-bosses that may be added to Valheim in the future.

Below is the roadmap for Valheim and what is planned for this year.

The first update is called Hearth and Home, which, as the name suggests, "will focus on the house-building aspect of the game, adding more buildings and things to do in and around the house," Törnqvist said.

"It will probably focus quite a bit on the food preparation aspect of the game, with more recipes and things like that," he continued.

"And he continued.

It must be good news for those building the fort in Valheim, because there are some great Viking houses being built. Personally, I am interested in having new recipes because my house sucks. My carrot patch has kept me happy for a while, but I am ready for more options.

This is a most intriguing name update, but unfortunately Iron Gate didn't tell me much more than that.

Cult of the Wolf, according to Törnqvist, is "an update focused on exploration and combat, and we hope there will be new fun and different encounters for players."

Wolves are often found in the mountain biome, so one would assume that this update will focus on that area, but we don't really know yet.

Ships and the sea "will introduce some ship customization and try to flesh out the sea biome a bit more," Törnqvist said. 'It's not as populated as other land biomes, so we're looking to add more things you can do at sea.'

Not a big surprise given the name, but more encounters at sea would be welcome, as would more ship customization. In particular, the Viking longships originally seemed to be decorated with colorful shields, but now there seems to be no such option.

Mistlands will add an entirely new biome to Valheim. New enemies, new items, new bosses, new resources, everything will be added. Yes, it's a pretty big undertaking, but we're going to embrace the challenge, so to speak," Törnqvist said.

Speaking of bosses, Törnqvist also confirmed that each new biome added to the game will have a boss. And if that wasn't enough, there may also be new bosses.

"In the final version of the game, there will be nine bosses in nine biomes. And we are also looking for additional mini-bosses. So there will be more bosses."

I also asked how adding entirely new biomes would affect the procedurally generated world that people are currently exploring and building, and whether those new biomes would overwrite sections of the world that players may have already visited asked.

"We are currently discussing how to do that. From a technical standpoint. I can't give you a definite answer right now," he said. It is worth noting that there are currently undeveloped biomes in Valheim, such as the Deep North and Ashland, and some players have come across unfinished mistlands areas, so it is possible that new biomes could be added without significantly disrupting players' progress .

Iron Gate is currently focusing on short-term bug fixes, and no roadmap update dates have yet been announced.

"The whole team is working on fixing all the bugs that become apparent when suddenly a million people are playing the game," Törnqvist said.
