Far Cry 6 beta email is a phishing scam, warns Ubisoft

"Far Cry 6" was announced in July with a cinematic trailer starring Giancarlo Esposito as Anton Castillo, the ruler of the island of Yara, who seems to have a complicated relationship with his young son. The film was supposed to be released in February 2021, but was eventually pushed back to the end of the year. Ubisoft has yet to announce a new release date, but has confirmed that it has not sent out invitations for the impending beta test.

The fake beta invitation was reported yesterday on Twitter by YouTuber theRadBrad. However, when you try to access it, it apparently installs some sort of malware that "monitors your screen and records everything you do."

No details of the malware or the email carrying it were shared, but Ubisoft support says it is indeed a scam. They tweeted, "We can confirm that the email regarding FC6 beta access is a phishing attempt. We have reported it," they tweeted." If you receive this or a similar email, please do not reply."

Unfortunately, this sort of thing is not terribly uncommon, especially in high-profile games that people are particularly eager to play. For example, a similar scam targeting Cyberpunk 2077 took place last year, and Epic warned of an Android phishing campaign for Fortnite in 2018; there was even one related to the COVID-19 pandemic. In other words, this notification means that a little caution could go a long way.

A representative from Ubisoft confirmed that the company is "aware of this and our team is currently investigating."
