Tank names may change dramatically in "Overwatch 2

Blizzard is making big changes to its tanks in "Overwatch 2. "During a behind-the-scenes look at the sequel at BlizzCon 2021, game director Jeff Kaplan revealed that the team is not satisfied with the current "Overwatch" tanks. According to Kaplan, the goal is to make each tank feel more like a "toe-tapping brawler."

To that end, Blizzard is even considering renaming the role entirely; in an interview with IGN, Kaplan said that the tanks will one day be called "brawlers" so that teams can "reset their expectations" of how they are supposed to play this role He said that this may happen.

"Right now, if you log into a game of 'Overwatch 1,' someone will say, 'I need a shield. I need a shield. ' I didn't feel like holding down the left trigger or the right button on my mouse all night. That's not my idea of how I want to play 'Overwatch' tonight, and yet I'm being forced to do so."

What it really means Blizzard used Reinhardt as an example of this experimental revamp in today's video: the "Brawler" enhancement allows Reinhardt to use Firestrike twice per cooldown, during the Charge ability and the ability to cancel Charge abilities. You can see it in action below.

To be fair, "tanks" already have a well-defined role within the team. They are designed to support shields (in some cases), deal aggro damage by becoming a bigger target, and set up kills for their allies with sweeping damage. Reinhardt's cleave hammer swing and destructive firestrike are classic examples. From Kaplan's comments today, it seemed unlikely that such a change would be made in Overwatch 2. However, it will be interesting to see what this aggressive approach means for other tanks. As a sigma, it could mean more time throwing stones and less time managing barriers.
