AMD Analyzing USB Disconnection Problem on 500 Series Motherboards

AMD is investigating a USB issue with its 500 series motherboard chipsets. on the AMD subreddit, the official account posted that AMD is aware of and investigating the root cause of the USB disconnect issue and is actively seeking help from the community to gather further information. The account posted that AMD is aware of the root cause of the USB disconnect issue and is actively seeking help from the community to gather further information.

The issue is said to occur when a user connects a device to a specific USB port, or a combination of both. This may cause the connection to be disconnected or the device to be unrecognized. There are three 500 Series chipsets currently available: X570, B550, and A520; this problem has been reported with the X570 and B550 chipsets.

AMD recommends that users submit a support ticket if they encounter this issue. [I use an X570 AMD Ryzen system on a daily basis, and this problem does not seem to be localized; many users on Reddit have reported experiencing this problem and workarounds (often marking USB sockets that work, or plugging things in in a specific order).

The report thread has a long list of users reporting problems:

"MSI B550 Carbon Gaming with 5900x: HP Reverb G2 only works with front USB 3 ports," says user Mugendon.

"I also have USB issues with the 400 series chipset mobo. I have semi-permanent recurring problems. Seems to be happening mostly with USB 3.0/3.1 ports, Asus Prime B450-Plus with Ryzen 9 3900X," says caboose1835.

However, quite a few users have found workarounds and recommend setting the PCIe slots to PCIe 3.0 mode:

"B550M Mortar/5800x and 3080. sometimes my h100i platinum pump has an irregular disconnect sound but I can usually guarantee that using any type of streaming software will do it. The solution was to change the PCIe from Auto to 3.0.

"Solution: changing the PCIE x16 slot to function in PCIe 3.0 mode solved the underperformance issue. This is a 100% confirmed issue and is its own category of USB problems on 500 series motherboards," AVxVoid seems confident in the fix.

It is at least worth a try. Let us know if you find this problem on your system and if the above method worked for you.

As far as AMD can report today, there are still a few devices facing USB connectivity issues, but we'll keep an eye on updates on this to see if there are further developments. It seems to be a hot topic, at least on the AMD subreddit, and many users are thankful that AMD has finally shared information about the issue.

Hopefully the next AGESA update will provide a quick and easy fix.
