Sony announces next generation VR with PlayStation 5. This is great news for virtual reality on all fronts.

Early this morning, a statement was released by Hideaki Nishino, PlayStation's senior vice president of platform planning and management, regarding the new PS VR system, which will launch next year with PS5. With the news that more PlayStation-exclusive games will be coming to PC this spring, starting with "Days Gone.

The new PS VR system (which has yet to be named, mind you) will have improved resolution, FOV, and tracking, and will be simpler to set up than its PS4 counterpart. The new PS VR will also easily connect to the PS5 with a single cable and feature a redesigned VR controller with "ergonomics and some of the key features from the DualSense wireless controller."

Nishino said the new PS VR headset will not hit store shelves in 2021, so those hoping to play "Resident Evil 7: Resident Evil Village" in VR when the PlayStation 5 launches will be disappointed. In an interview with GQ UK, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan reinforced the company's commitment to VR on the console, saying that development kits are about to be sent to developers.

"We believe in VR and are very happy with the current PlayStation VR results," Ryan said, adding, "We think we can do good business with the new VR system in PlayStation 5. More importantly, it has the potential to be really big and important down the road."

Sony did not announce any new specifications, images, or potential pricing for the next-generation PS VR. there is no arguing that the PS VR is the headset that made the previous generation so popular and brought affordable VR gaming into the mainstream.

But the Oculus Quest 2 showed that affordable, easy-to-use VR can work great on a gaming PC, Facebook ties aside; since the 90Hz update, the Quest 2 has become a great PC VR headset, and a 120Hz update is also expected.

Hopefully, Sony's confirmation of next-gen VR support will be a boon for VR as a whole and may encourage more big-name developers to focus on virtual reality. And that would be a win for VR gaming on any platform.
