Cross-Progression and Cross-Play Coming to Rainbow Six Siege

When Ubisoft switched from Uplay to its new client Ubisoft Connect last year, the publisher promised to include cross-save and cross-platform play in future games whenever possible. At the time, this promise did not include "Rainbow Six Siege," which was disappointing to players who wanted to combine their operator and skin collections across all platforms. Rejoice: it looks like our wish will finally be granted.

These features are in the works, "Siege" game director Jean-Baptiste Halle told PC Gamer at a recent "Crimson Heist" season preview event. We're actively working on cross-progression and crossplay," Halle said. In the console realm, it would be great if we could get PlayStation and Xbox to play together."

Halle said that once crossplay is in place, matchmaking will take less time, especially in regions where the population of one console greatly outnumbers that of the other. He cited the Asian region as an example, noting that PlayStation players far outnumber Xbox players there; as for PC, Halle is "skeptical" about putting this platform together with consoles.

"I see the pros, but I also see the cons. So it's too early to communicate on this one."

One of the cons is that in a precision shooter like "Siege," players using a keyboard and mouse have an advantage over those using a controller. struggling with players who rank up by using third-party hardware that allows for mouse and keyboard use, so an official implementation is unlikely to be healthy for balance. Ubisoft could simply enable native mouse and keyboard support on both consoles, but that could create an environment where only mouse users rise to the top.

Thankfully, cross-progression should be far less controversial. Players can already migrate progression from last generation consoles to the PS5 or Xbox Series X/S, but the three main ecosystems are still siloed against each other. Halle says it's too early to say when the gates of cross-progression will open, but he looks forward to the day when you won't have to buy every operator twice to play with friends on PC and PS5.
