Halo" TV show coming to Paramount+ next year

ViacomCBS has announced plans to air Halo television programming on its streaming service Paramount+ in 2021.

This comes as Deadline reports that the network announced during this week's ViacomCBS Streaming Event that it has moved the Halo series from Showtime to Paramount+.CBS Chief Creative Officer David Nevins said early footage convinced him to reposition the space opera as a flagship title for the new platform.

"We were looking for a distinctive show that would surpass CBS All Access' 'Star Trek' franchise and what would be the definitive Paramount+ series, and 'Halo' always fit the bill, but when we saw it in action, we knew it would work."

"Halo" has long been in the running for an animated television adaptation, with Steven Spielberg announcing in 2013 that he was working on a series. However, the struggle to make a live-action adaptation of "Halo" goes back to an incredibly promising (though ultimately aborted) short by "District 9" director Neill Blomkamp; production on the CBS show began in 2019 and was about 55-60% through the first season before being aborted by Covid-19 last March. It had been filmed.

Many of the people working on the show have been involved with the "Halo" project since 2013, and the move to the new channel will not significantly change the show's development; Showtime will continue to work with Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment and "Halo" caretakers, 343 Industries, and will continue to lead production of the series. The show will star Pablo Schreiber as Master Chief, with Jen Taylor reprising her role as Cortana.
