Report Microsoft in Talks to Acquire Discord

Discord is reportedly considering a sale, and according to Bloomberg, Microsoft could acquire the platform for more than $10 billion. or more to acquire the platform, according to Bloomberg. This was reported earlier today by VentureBeat, which said that the gaming chat company is "exploring options" for a sale and that "several parties" are interested. [One of Bloomberg's sources said Discord is more likely to go public than to sell. He also stated that Discord has had discussions with Epic Games and Amazon in the past.

If another company were to acquire Discord, it would be a good strategic acquisition. As of last December, the company boasted 140 million active users per month and reportedly doubled its valuation last year from $3.5 billion in June to $7 billion in November.

Discord is ubiquitous among the gaming community, usually preferred over first-party alternatives offered by Sony and Microsoft, not to mention Steam and Epic Games. The chat service was also rebranded in 2020, partially severing its overt ties to video games and adopting a more "generic" public image.

Both reports suggest that several parties are interested in acquiring Discord, and Microsoft may have competition on its hands. For reference, Microsoft's $7.5 billion acquisition of Bethesda is less than its $10 billion purchase of Discord.

When asked to comment on the acquisition, Discord said it does not comment on rumors or speculation.
