Riot begins hiring for MMO "League of Legends".

In December 2020, Greg Street, Riot's VP of IP and Entertainment, revealed without any pomp or circumstance that the studio was working on a League of Legends MMO. Riot later confirmed the announcement, which he only tweeted, although Street seemed to suggest that the project was still in its early stages at the time, saying, "We will be working on a massively multiplayer online role-playing game."

Now we can take a somewhat closer look at what Riot has in store, thanks to worldofruneterra.com, which leads to Riot's recruitment website for the MMO. It also confirms that the wheels of development are just beginning to turn.

"No, it's not a dream. We are working on an MMORPG based on the world of The League!" It is written. "It takes a lot of people to make an MMO and a pretty large raid team to bring Runeterra to life. That's where you come in. We post new roles regularly, but right now we're not looking for specific openings for teams - we're just preparing for the journey (and need to replace the green first).

Specifically, Riot is looking for applicants with experience in gameplay engineering, game and UX design, game art, and game production, and while "direct experience" in MMO production is obviously a big plus, it's not a blanket requirement. Also, just to be clear, there is no indication as to whether the game will actually be titled "World of Runeterra" or whether it will be an easy working title like an MMO.

Either way, League of Legends fans are sure to rejoice. This lore-heavy MOBA is a natural fit for a more exploratory, RPG-like experience, and as we noted when Street dropped this bomb, players have been asking for a League MMO for years.Street's statement is clearly warranted, but Riot's website, shown in black and white, somehow makes it all the more real.

The League of Legends MMO is clearly a big step for Riot, which has been a single-game studio for most of its history. It also entered the competitive FPS scene with Valorant, tried its hand at card games with Legends of Runeterra, released Teamfight Tactics autobattler, and has a single-player RPG and a fighting game currently code-named Project L It is currently in production.

Thanks, VentureBeat.
