Crystal Dynamics' 1999 action-adventure "Legacy Of Kain: Soul Reaver" is no longer available on Steam.

According to VGC, the game is no longer available on Steam, although it continues to be sold on GOG. The listing for the game now says: "Square Enix has temporarily removed this title from sale due to an important update. Please check back soon."

Square Enix may be working on an update to make this game playable on newer systems. Not so surprising for an older PC game, which doesn't often get discontinued in the process; PC Gamer has reached out to Square Enix for comment.

Crystal Dynamics may be best known for its recent "Tomb Raider" reboot series. However, in the late 90s, the studio's Legacy Of Kain game was in direct competition with Lara Croft. Soul Reaver was even directed by Amy Hennig, who would later lead the Uncharted series.

"'Soul Reaver' feels less like a competitor to the old 'Tomb Raider' and more like a missing link to 'Dark Souls,' a discarded idea revived in a newer, much meaner form," said Rick Lane, who returned to the game in 2018 . Soul Reaver was one of the last great games of the 20th century, and Legacy of Cain is now all but forgotten, but its spirit lives on in another body.

The only regret is that, for now, there is one less place to buy this platformer masterpiece.
