If LG can shut down operations during Earth Hour, then you can only shut down power for 60 minutes, right?

If you are reading this from a SpaceX station on Mars in the distant future, watching the long-dead Earth spinning in the distance, you can ignore this historical article. If not, fasten your seatbelts.

LG, a major Korean electronics manufacturer, has announced its participation in Earth Hour, a WWF initiative. The movement aims to reduce carbon emissions and show how much it cares about its only (and current) home; LG plans to cut its carbon footprint in half by 2030 and is calling for participation in Earth Hour.

"LG sympathizes with the seriousness of climate change and has joined this campaign to strengthen its commitment to reducing carbon emissions," an LG official reportedly said (via machine translation)." LG plans to proactively respond to stricter international environmental regulations and develop environmentally friendly products and technologies."

The movement, which began 15 years ago, involves homes and businesses turning off all non-essential lights and equipment for one hour as a way to show support, raise awareness, and help reduce their carbon footprint. [Already WWF has gained the support of companies such as Philips, IKEA, The Body Shop, FIFA, and HSBC, as well as countless celebrities, including Greta Thunberg, the Prime Minister of Canada, and the Pope.

The movement seems to be gaining momentum, with large corporations like LG joining the fray, and the WWF website offers a participation toolkit that gives prospective participants an idea of what to expect and how to spend their time in the dark.

The event will take place on Saturday, March 27 from 12:30 - 11:30pm PST (8:30 - 9:30pm CST). If you are so inclined and able to perform, we have another challenge for you: hit the off button on your PC.

You have one hour. We promise you won't go anywhere. Besides, as the saying goes, absence makes the heart grow fonder.
