Gamestop starts selling GPUs, apparently has no GPUs to sell

Gamestop is in the news again, but this time it's not as exciting as the chaos it is wreaking on the stock market and our lives. The giant gaming retailer has added PC gaming hardware to its online product catalog, which of course includes the RTX 30 series GPUs. In case you were wondering, these are also sold out.

As expected, as soon as Gamestop learned they were selling GPUs, they quickly sold out; navigating the PC gaming pages is a bit of a nightmare, but there are also a smattering of non-GPU PC gaming products for sale, such as pre-built systems, monitors, and motherboards.

Gamestop's digital flyer was the first hint that the giant retailer is entering the PC hardware market, and Gamestop CEO George Sherman said during an earnings call that the company will further expand its PC gaming and consumer electronics assortment. It is unclear whether the new products will be exclusive to Gamestop.com or whether they will be offered in limited quantities to brick-and-mortar stores.

Gamestop's entry into the PC gaming hardware arena makes sense, given that Sherman said the move will "reduce the reliance on the cyclicality of the console-based gaming market." This news comes after Gamestop reported that net sales fell to $2.12 billion from $2.19 billion last year.

"We continue our efforts to expand GameStop's product catalog to include more addressable markets. This includes expanding our broad product offering to include PC games, computers, monitors, gaming tables, mobile games, and gaming televisions."

This seems like a more realistic move for Gamestop than the conversion of several brick-and-mortar stores into Internet cafes/event spaces last year. For many of us, though, it's just another site where we press F5 repeatedly in our browsers, disappointed that the RTX 3080 is not in stock.
