Activision Ordered to Shut Down SBMM Warzone, a Call of Duty Statistics Site

A popular "Call of Duty: Warzone" stat-tracking site has been ordered by lawyers representing Activision to shut down the Belgium-based site by this coming Monday (March 29). The site's creator announced the impending closure in a tweet desperately asking Activision for a solution.

The creators of SBMM Warzone claim that SBMM Warzone violates Activision's API Terms of Service and infringes Activision's copyright. Activision's complaint appears to be primarily a concern over potential privacy violations.

The creators have reached out to Activision in an attempt to find a solution or form a partnership, but have not received a response. 'We want to talk to them. We believe we can bring more to this community," one of the site's creators told Eurogamer.

The SBMM Warzone website aggregates data from public profiles and players who opt-in to the site in order to aggregate and understand the opaque rating system that Call of Duty uses for skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) The data is being compiled. Warzone's skill-based matchmaking has come under fire from the community in recent months, with some players deliberately dying to play in low-ranked casual games.

Players are very attracted to the site, which has advertising and operates a premium membership program for $4 to $6 per month. Premium membership unlocks additional aggregation of player data, such as storing a player's past game statistics and Gulag win percentage. Monetization was not mentioned in Activision's complaint letter.

Several prominent members of the Call of Duty community have replied to the SBMM Warzone tweet expressing surprise or disappointment at Activision's decision, but a general attitude of resignation dominates their replies. At first glance, the Call of Duty community does not seem optimistic that Activision will resolve the situation in a way that will satisfy the creators of SBMM Warzone or the community.

The creators of SBMM Warzone have promised to refund customers if the website is shut down.
