Monster-Free "Adventure Mode" Appears in "Amnesia Rebirth

Good news, cowards! Amnesia: Rebirth can now be played from start to finish without having to face creepy monsters.

Amnesia's new adventure mode, which comes as a free update on Steam, Epic, and GOG, follows a similar mode in Frictional's previous title, SOMA. Like that title's Safe Mode, the adventure eliminates all "life-threatening" encounters with bad guys, but the developer has also taken larger steps to separate Amnesia's tone from horror.

Rebirth's desert environment has been illuminated to alleviate the claustrophobic feeling of the base game, and fear effects have been removed entirely. New puzzles were also introduced in certain areas, a change from the mood of dread in what creative lead Fredrik Ohlsson called "an Indiana Jones-like adventure."

"I think anyone who likes story-driven adventure games will be excited about this new mode. Not everyone is into horror, and we don't want to do anything to discourage people from experiencing Tasi's story... We did something similar when we released the safe mode for SOMA... We did something similar when we released the safe mode for SOMA. and it was very well received and allowed us to open up the game to a wider audience.

The safe mode in "SOMA" worked well because monsters were not the core theme of that game. The sudden appearance of creepy monsters in video games often spoiled the existential panic scare that the game had worked so hard to build up. But motherhood, the theme of "Rebirth," is inextricably linked to that fear.

Would pressing the F button on a baby carry the same weight if you weren't genuinely afraid for your unborn child?
