New AMD Ryzen APUs May Solve Global GPU Shortage

Can't get your hands on a graphics card? AMD may have a temporary, if somewhat lackluster, solution. AMD Ryzen 5000 APUs have once again turned heads, this time on what appears to be an OEM component list. far from the power of the RX 6900 XT. While not quite up to the power of the RX 6900 XT, these could provide some much needed GPU silicon in a pinch.

According to information scraped by Twitter user momomo_us, three chips are likely to appear: the AMD Ryzen 7 5700G, Ryzen 5 5600G, and Ryzen 3 5300G. These loadouts are relatively familiar because they can be compared to the Ryzen 5000 mobile chips launched earlier this year. This means that the top chips have the processing power of up to eight cores.

In other words, we are almost certainly looking at a maximum graphics loadout of 8 cores of integrated GPU power, built on an architecture similar to the Vega generation.

Admittedly, that's not much, but it is a GPU that can push decent 720p graphics in most games and solid 1080p performance in the least demanding games. The advantage here is that the recent GPU shortage has made it difficult to get other GPUs without spending a fortune. These Ryzen APUs will offer something in terms of graphics, or at least tangible gaming frame rates. At least more than Intel's iGPUs.

APUs will also not necessarily preclude the opportunity to upgrade discrete GPUs down the road.

But there's a catch: AMD did not sell Ryzen 4000 series APUs directly to customers. Instead, these APUs were only available in pre-built systems via OEMs. So far, AMD has not revealed whether the Ryzen 5000 series APUs will do the same.

We expect AMD to bring back DIY APUs. For our GPU-less budget PC builds, we still recommend the Ryzen 5 3400G of yesteryear, a great chip, albeit a bit hard to find in stock, but it would be great if they upgraded to an 8-core chip in 2021.
