Celeste Classic would be much easier with a portal gun.

Celeste Classic would be much easier with a portal gun.

Bring Portal's portable wormhole device to Celeste and the platform may be a cinch, but there's something more sinister about this Aperture-sponsored mountain walk.

Caroline, a self-described "Portal demake masquerading as a Celeste Classic mod," has turned the latter platform puzzle into a series of Portal-style spatial challenges. Currently available for free on Itch, Caroline has over a dozen stages and is a bit on the easy side, but it is interesting to see Celeste used as a vessel for remaking Valve's puzzler.

Modder Meep doesn't just take over Portal's physics puzzlers; Valve's humor carries over into the short test announcement. The absence of Ellen McClain's voice acting is something of a letdown, but Meep generally strikes the right balance with its sterile yet oddly malicious writing.

This is not Portal's first 2D remake. The hugely popular Portal: that remake may have been lost with the end of Adobe Flash at the end of 2020, but the archived version is fully playable in the Internet Archive's Flash Library.

Celeste Classic creator Maddy Thorson also reprised the original version of PICO-8 in a sequel earlier this year. Free follow-up Lani's Trek replaced the original's air dash with a grappling hook, opening up a whole new avenue of challenges for the hardcore platform.
